Take a photo of a fish and Fishly sends it to an AI model that recognizes the species. You get back its common and scientific name, its natural origin, a confidence level, and care notes for the fish — usually in a few seconds. It works best with a clear, well-lit photo taken from the side, with the whole fish in frame.

Fishly's results are AI-generated estimates. Accuracy depends on photo quality, the angle, and how distinctive the fish is — some species look nearly identical in a photo even to experts. That's why Fishly shows a confidence level with every match: a "best guess" is not the same as a certain answer. For fish that are hard to tell apart from a picture, treat the result as a strong lead rather than a final verdict.

Use a clear, well-lit photo with the fish shown from the side and the whole body visible. Avoid blurry shots, heavy glare on the glass, and photos where the fish is far away or partly hidden. If you know where you spotted the fish, set the habitat hint (freshwater, saltwater, or pond) before scanning to help narrow it down.

Before you scan, you can optionally tell Fishly whether you saw the fish in freshwater, saltwater, or a pond. This context helps the AI narrow down the species and improves the match. It's optional — you can always leave it off.

The care notes are general guidance for aquarium hobbyists — water type, temperature range, tank size, tankmates, and diet for the species. They are not veterinary advice, and Fishly does not diagnose or treat sick fish. If a fish looks unwell, check your water parameters first and consult a qualified aquatic veterinarian.

Every fish you identify can be saved to your tank. From there you can open a fish to see its care notes any time and log care actions — water changes, feedings, filter cleanings, and notes — so you can keep track of when you last cared for it.

No. Fishly doesn't ask for your name, email, or a password. When you first open the app, an anonymous profile is created automatically so your tank and history stay in sync — but it isn't tied to your real-world identity.

Your photos are used only to identify the fish. When you scan, the image is sent for AI analysis and is not stored on our servers afterward. A copy is kept on your device so you can see it next to the fish in your tank, and it's removed when you delete the app. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Fishly offers an auto-renewing subscription that unlocks unlimited identifications and the full care log. Payment is charged to your Apple ID, and the subscription renews automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel any time in your iPhone's Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

If you reinstalled Fishly or got a new phone, open the app and use the "Restore Purchases" option on the paywall or in Settings. Your subscription is tied to your Apple ID, so it will come back as long as you're signed in with the same account.

Your tank, care log, and photos are stored on your device and are removed when you delete the app. If you'd also like us to delete the anonymous data associated with your installation, email us at support@codexia.app and we'll take care of it.
